Announce -29th January

Ian Writes…

29th JanuaryFrankly, I struggle with the Churches’ Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (WPCU). I like the slower pace after Christmas and the WPCU injects an unwelcome busyness. I love Unity but not in January please!

But it also goes deeper  All too often the liturgy seems like an effort to get us all singing from the same hymn sheet and so avoid us gritting our teeth saying things we don’t quite believe. It doesn’t feel authentic. By contrast, I love being part of the Good Friday Stations of the Cross in Ballincollig, because it is at the very heart of the RC tradition. We are participating in a visible re-enactment of the road to Calvary with a script that is already written not contrived. .

And for me this is Unity, praying and worshipping together and giving witness to the world that for all of our schisms in the past, the church is now being a sign of unity to a fragile and divided world.

But more than that, we gather because of the relationships that have developed over the years in Ballincollig and in a very exceptional way in Blarney. Here the Alpha course, the mid-week Growth Group, our faithful church members,  and the presence of Robert and his predecessors, has developed into a pulsating unity that takes you out of the comfort of your home on a cold January night with anticipation.

And so this year, I found myself leading the WPCU in Blarney because of some date confusion and a vanishing act (called study leave) by Robert!

And yes we were all singing from the same hymn sheet. But this one went deep – a visible breaking down of the barriers by the power of the Cross. Here we were celebrating years of trust and bridge building.

And now Father George from the Ballincollig Parish has asked us to join them for a Week of Prayer for Unity service. The two of us had agreed over a cup of coffee that we would do something at Pentecost. But George still wants us to come together in January. He has a million things to do and yet UNITY is so important for him that it makes a nonsense of my wittering about January being the wrong month, as if unity was on my terms only.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Sunday 29th January 2017 7pm at the Church of St Mary and St John, Station Rd Ballincollig.

UNITED CELEBRATION

Holy Communion THE UPSIDE DOWN HEROES OF FAITH

Hebrews 11 & 12 Led by St Peter’s.

THE UNITED CELEBRATION is changing!  There will be more faith stories, a varied mix of worship, a focus on sharing what is going on across the four missional communities, with each church taking it in turn to lead the way. And with that in mind, and so that we can commit to one another, it will be the only service that day. All this will be reviewed in due course.
